ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Cf. Lk 4: 18
Spiritus Domini super me: propter quod unxit me, evangelizare pauperibus misit me, sanare contritos corde.

Deus, qui advertizement salutem pauperum et cleri institutionem beatum Vincentium presbyterum virtutibus apostolicis imbuisti, praesta, quaesumus, ut, eodem spiritu ferventes, et amemus quod amavit, et quod docuit operemur.

FIRST READING i Cor 1:26-31

Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters.
Not many of you were wise past human standards,
not many were powerful,
not many were of noble birth.
Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise,
and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong,
and God chose the lowly and despised of the earth,
those who count for cipher,
to reduce to nothing those who are something,
and so that no human being might avowal earlier God.
Information technology is due to him that y'all are in Christ Jesus,
who became for us wisdom from God,
as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,
so that, as information technology is written,
Whoever boasts, should avowal in the Lord.

So he said to his disciples,
"The harvest is arable but the laborers are few;
and then ask the chief of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest."

Deus, qui beato Vincentio divina celebranti mysteria tribuisti quod tractabat imitari, concede, ut, huius sacrificii virtute, ipsi quoque in oblationem tibi acceptabilem transeamus.

SECOND READING

From a writing by Saint Vincent de Paul, priest
(Epist. 2546: Correspondance, entretiens, documents, Paris 1922-1925, 7)

Serving the poor is to be our first preference

Even though the poor are often rough and unrefined, nosotros must not estimate them from external appearances nor from the mental gifts they seem to have received. On the reverse, if yous consider the poor in the lite of organized religion, then you volition observe that they are taking the place of the Son of God who chose to be poor. Although in his passion he almost lost the advent of a homo and was considered a fool by the Gentiles and a stumbling block past the Jews, he showed them that his mission was to preach to the poor: He sent me to preach the proficient news to the poor. We as well ought to have this same spirit and imitate Christdue south actions, that is, we must take care of the poor, console them, assist them, support their crusade.

Since Christ willed to be built-in poor, he chose for himself disciples who were poor. He made himself the servant of the poor and shared their poverty. He went so far as to say that he would consider every act which either helps or harms the poor every bit done for or against himself. Since God surely loves the poor, he too loves those who dear the poor. For when ane person holds another dear, he also includes in his affection anyone who loves or serves the one he loves. That is why we hope that God volition love us for the sake of the poor. So when we visit the poor and needy, we try to be agreement where they are concerned. We sympathize with them so fully that nosotros can repeat Paulsouthward words: I accept become all things to all men. Therefore, nosotros must try to exist stirred by our neighbors worries and distress. We must beg God to pour into our hearts sentiments of pity and compassion and to fill them over again and again with these dispositions.

Information technology is our duty to adopt the service of the poor to everything else and to offer such service as quickly every bit possible. If a needy person requires medicine or other assist during prayer time, do whatever has to be done with peace of listen. Offering the deed to God equally your prayer. Do non become upset or feel guilty because you interrupted your prayer to serve the poor. God is not neglected if yous go out him for such service. One of Gods works is just interrupted so that some other can exist carried out. So when you leave prayer to serve some poor person, remember that this very service is performed for God. Charity is certainly greater than any dominion. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity. Since she is a noble mistress, we must do whatever she commands. With renewed devotion, and so, nosotros must serve the poor, especially outcasts and beggars. They accept been given to u.s.a. as our masters and patrons.

RESPONSORY 1 Corinthians nine:xix, 22; Job 29:15-16
Though I am non bound to anyone,
I became a slave to all.
To the weak I became weak.
I became all things to all men
that I might at least save some.

I was optics for the blind and feet for the lame;
I was a father to the poor.
I became all things to all men
that I might at least salvage some.
